Liver, kidney, heart, and bone-marrow transplant surgery at Florence Nightingale Hospitals (Turkey)

Being one of a few institutions in Turkey entitled to hold educational courses on liver transplant for local and international surgeons, the hospital’s Transplantation Center has implemented of numerous Turkey’s “firsts” including:

According to Turkish legislation, only living donor kidney transplantation can be performed for international patients.

The key requirement for kidney donor is to belong to the 4th degree of kinship at most with the recipient which also concerns in-law relatives. If the blood group of a donor and recipient mismatch, they can participate in cross transplantation program. It means that two couples if suitable in terms of age, gender, and blood group can make cross transplantation of donor kidneys.

Kidney transplantation in children has long been successfully performed at Florence Nightingale Hospitals in Istanbul. The process requires that children under 20 kg of weight receive small kidneys while those over 20 kg of weight can receive their kidney from their parents. Under Turkish law, individuals applicable for heart transplant surgery are heart patients under 65 years old with stage-D heart failure. This means their life expectancy is less than 1 year.
