FAQs About Cancer Virotherapy in Canada: How It Works, How to Get It, and How Much It Costs

Is Rigvir® able to cure my type of cancer? Can I apply it as the only method or together with chemo? What are its side effects? Is Rigvir® registered in Canada?

Here you’ll find the answers to the most frequently asked questions we receive from Canadian citizens.

Rigvir® Invention In 1950s With Further Research Conducted And Registration Received By 4 States

What is Rigvir®?

Riga virus (Rigvir®) is the basis of virotherapy, cancer treatment method that relies on using oncolytic (anti-cancer) non-pathogenic (doesn’t cause other diseases) virus to help get your organism rid of malignant cells.

Who and when invented Rigvir®?

A Latvian prof. Aina Muceniece conducted research in 1950–60s, and managed to invent Rigvir®. It was originally found in babies organisms.

How does it actually work?

Rigvir® is stored in cooled vials to be injected into your muscle. Once there, the vaccine scans your body cells to find the malignant ones. Then the process of oncotropism takes place — the virus penetrates into the cancer cells and destroys them from the inside.

Ok, what about the side effects?

Usually, Rigvir® doesn’t cause any side effects. Sometimes, you may face drowsiness, fatigue and slight body temperature increase up to 37.5°C or 99.5°F. This is because the medicine triggers your immune system to fight the virus who fights your cancer.

Will Rigvir® work on my type of cancer?

Originally, Rigvir® was invented to fight melanoma. Further research showed its effectiveness while beating other solid tumours:

  • Melanoma

  • Lung cancer

  • Various types of sarcoma

  • Neuroendocrine tumors

  • Glioblastoma

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Uterine cancer

  • Breast cancer

  • Bladder cancer

  • Prostate cancer

  • Kidney cancer

  • Pancreatic cancer

  • Colorectal cancer

Leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma still resist the virus.

Are there any research proving the efficacy of the virotherapy?

Yes, and their results have been published in a number of peer-reviewed medical journals. The recent one is from APMIS (Acta pathologica, microbiologica, et immunologica Scandinavica) published in July 2016:

“All patients started Rigvir® treatment within a few months after being diagnosed and are currently continuing Rigvir® treatment… Using current standard treatments, the survival of patients with the present diagnoses is low. In contrast, the patients described here were diagnosed 3.5, 7.0, and 6.6 years ago, and their condition has improved and been stable for over 1.5, 6.5, and 4 years, respectively. These observations suggest that virotherapy using Rigvir® can successfully be used in long-term treatment of patients with melanoma stage IV M1c, small cell lung cancer stage IIIA, and histiocytic sarcoma stage IV...”

Where is Rigvir® registered?

Latvia registered Rigvir® in 2004, followed by Georgia and Armenia in 2015 and 2016 accordingly. Uzbekistan has recently joined the list of Rigvir®-recognizing states. Moreover, to make Rigvir® more accessible, it was provided with Horizon 2020 grant (the biggest European Commission research and innovation funding program). Because all the effort is focused on making Rigvir® available for wider European audience, the medicine hasn’t yet been registered outside Europe.

Is it possible possible to get Rigvir® injections in Canada?

Rigvir® is still out of reach on Canadian market. Though, you still can get virotherapy treatment outside Canada. One of the clinics that makes Rigvir® available in European region is located in Brannenburg, Germany. Since its establishment, the specialists there helped more than 3,000 cancer patients to overcome the disease.

The founders of the clinic are 2 cancer professionals who gained 20+ years of experience in cancer treatment. When opening the clinic, they also took care of the vibes: in a small town, surrounded by forests, the clinic looks and feels like a country house. People there take care of you starting from your landing at Munich International Airport and transferring you to the clinic and ending with giving you recommendations after your 1-week treatment in Germany is completed.
