FAQs About Cancer Virotherapy in Canada: How It Works, How to Get It, and How Much It Costs
Is Rigvir® able to cure my type of cancer? Can I apply it as the only method or together with chemo? What are its side effects? Is Rigvir® registered in Canada?
Here you’ll find the answers to the most frequently asked questions we receive from Canadian citizens.
What is Rigvir®?
Riga virus (Rigvir®) is the basis of virotherapy, cancer treatment method that relies on using oncolytic (anti-cancer) non-pathogenic (doesn’t cause other diseases) virus to help get your organism rid of malignant cells.
Who and when invented Rigvir®?
A Latvian prof. Aina Muceniece conducted research in 1950-60s and managed to invent Rigvir®. It was originally found in babies organisms.
How does it actually work?
Rigvir® is stored in cooled vials to be injected into your muscle. Once there, the vaccine scans your body cells to find the malignant ones. Then the process of oncotropism takes place - the virus penetrates into the cancer cells and destroys them from the inside.
Will Rigvir® work on my type of cancer?
Originally, Rigvir® was invented to fight melanoma. Further research showed its effectiveness while beating other solid tumours, but leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma still resist the virus. You can find the full list of cancer types responsive to Rigvir® below.
Ok, what about the side effects?
Usually, Rigvir® doesn’t cause any side effects. Sometimes, you may face drowsiness, fatigue and slight body temperature increase up to 37.5°C or 99.5°F. This is because the medicine triggers your immune system to fight the virus who fights your cancer.
Is there any research proving the efficacy of the virotherapy?
Yes. The results of numerous clinical trials have been published in a number of peer-reviewed medical journals. The recent one is from APMIS (Acta pathologica, microbiologica, et immunologica Scandinavica) published in July 2016:
Another specialized medical peer-reviewed journal Melanoma Research specifies that Rigvir® can reduce mortality of cancer patients in 4-6 times:
Where is Rigvir® registered?
Latvia was the first country to register Rigvir® in 2004, followed by Georgia and Armenia in 2015 and 2016 accordingly. Moreover, to make Rigvir® more accessible, it was provided with Horizon 2020 grant (the biggest European Commission research and innovation funding program). Because all the effort is focused on making Rigvir® available for wider European audience, the medicine hasn’t yet been registered outside Europe.
